Replacing Fork Seals

Couple things I've had good luck with doing fork seals -
  1. Drain the fluid first - really messy if you don't ;-)
  2. Compress the shock as far as you can to keep the insides from spinning when you remove the allen bolt in the bottom. I ran a rope through the axle hole, turned the shock upside down, tied a loop in the rope and stood on it. Make sure you've got the appropriate allen wrench socket bit right handy (it's tough to move very far in this position).
  3. Once the allen bolt is removed, you can take off the top cap and remove the spring. If you have trouble getting it loose, the best way to hold the slider is to put it back in the triple-tree so that the top of the slider is well above the clamp part. Saves the agravation of slip-jaw pliers and wrags and stuff.
  4. Note: This step is currently under debate. It may not apply to the Triple's forks. First try to carefully pull the tube from the slider. If it comes all the way out, you can't do this step. This trick I learned doing Honda forks - use the slider like a slide-hammer to pull out the seal. It will take some force to do this, cause you're actually knocking out the top bushing while your're doing this.
  5. PVC pipe couplings come in nearly perfect sizes to drive most fork seals nice and evenly. I have done 2 Yamahas and 4 Honda's this way with great success. If the spacing is off a little, you can use the old fork seal to help even out the contact area.

Nuther tip - go ahead and spring for some real fork oil. ATF works, but not great and the real thing ain't that expensive for the improvement in Forking.
