1977 Yamaha XS750-2D

SN 1J7-106057

I purchased this bike on 7/13/96 from a guy in Kenosha, Wisconsin. At the time, I was spending the summer just across the Illinois/ Wisconsin border in Winthrop Harbor. I was commuting daily between there and Milwaukee (100 miles round-trip) and decided that I could spare $500 for a cheap motorcycle to keep the miles from piling up too fast on my car. I liked the bike so much I kept it and brought it back with me to Santa Barbara that fall.

Check out the dyno results for my bike after the ring & valve jobs!

SO YOU WANT TO BUY AN OLD USED BIKE?

NO mine isn't for sale...just thought I'd inform you beforehand, that I've easily paid the purchase price again just to keep the bike in running condition, and to spiff it up just a tad. Here's the repair log:

  • TIRES: Rear, new $90. 2 "new2me" front tires, $25 ea. (includes mounting at shop).
  • SEALS: Rear drive unit; outer, and left- and right-inner. $46 (labor = me). Front fork seals $32, plus $20 labor.
  • BRAKES: Aside from fixing the previous owner's stupidity (put the pads in wrong, and then broke the mounting bolt) I've gone through 2 new2me front master cylinders ($35 ea.) because of leaks. I'm on my third.
  • CARBS: Had them sync'd once ($45) at a shop, then bought my own gauges ($60). Also, correcting previous owner's stupidity required heavy time investment. Other parts pro bono (it pays to make friends!). Completely rebuilt them in 1999 (see below).
  • LIGHTS: Replaced standard bulb with halogen setup (free: again, friends are worth it!).
  • LOOKS: Seat recovered cost $55. Many hours invested cleaning oxidation off wheels, engine and repainting. New mirrors ($12)
  • MISC: Includes things as points/plugs/brake fluid/paint/etc... never ending.
  • REBUILD TIME: Between 10/98 and 5/99 I re-ringed the pistons, reground the valves (and replaced one burned exhaust valve) and rebuilt the carbs. All told, with tool costs included (mainly a chain breaker-riveter) this was over $600. Gasket set = $95, 3 ring sets = $109, machine shop labor = $100, valve = $20, carb kits 3 @ $20...The bike only had just over 28K on it when I did this. MAKE SURE YOU ADJUST YOUR VALVES ON A REGULAR BASIS!!!

IS IT WORTH IT?

If you own a Yamaha triple, DAMN STRAIGHT it is!
