Little bit more progress, test fitted a new inline filter.
I've gone away from a car type screw on filter, after doing a bit of research I've gone with an inline filter.
This one is actually a high flow, high pressure, O-ringed EFI fuel filter with a cleanable stainless filter.
It filters to 30 microns and I figure if its good enough to keep dirt out of tiny fuel nozzles it will do the job.
K&N also do do a good inline filter that can be used for fuel or oil.

Still got a couple of hours staring and drinking bourbon before I'm 100% happy with the concept but I think it will be OK.
Its far enough away from the headers and in clear airflow so I don't think heat will be an issue.
Its also close enough to the frame that in a crash the engine cases will protect it.

Still tossing up about running the cooler upside down to keep it full of oil when the engine isn't running. Space becomes a bit of an issue ( clearing the wheel and triple clamp). Probably need to make a mount off the headstok in front of the forks to do this.
